Gen (retd) Raheel Sharif today left for Riyadh in a special Saudi plane, which had arrived to pick him up earlier today.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Saudi government had announced on December 30, 2015, to form a coalition for coordinating and supporting military operations against terrorists in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and some African countries.

Initially the military coalition was comprised of 34 majority Muslim countries but the figure later rose to 39 after a few more countries opted to join the military alliance.

The headquarters of the military alliance would be Riyadh and the alliance aims to counter terrorism in the region.
