‘Federal govt to consider other options if Sindh does not extend Rangers’ powers’

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday said that the federal government will consider alternate legal options if Sindh Government does not extend Rangers powers in public interest.

In a statement issued from his office, the minister said it is unfortunate that Rangers’ performance and sacrifices are made controversial after every three months.

He claimed that residents of Karachi are fully satisfied with Rangers’ performance and trust the force a lot. He said it seems strange that the provincial government compromises security of the people of Karachi for its specific political interests.

He said on the one hand, Sindh Government wants Rangers’ to use them as guards of its functionaries, but is not ready to give the paramilitary force powers in light of the concerned Act.

He said Sindh Government’s intention to give Rangers limited powers is violation of law and the rules as no law can be made limited through an executive order. He said Ranges is not a security company to be deputed for the security of VIPs.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said Rangers have been given powers in Punjab under Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
